New press Release from the US Forest Service Available: http://www.lasdblog.org/Pressrelease/Public/
LOS ANGELES (Tue., Sept. 9, 2009 – 3:30 p.m.) – The Los Angeles County Chief Executive Office (CEO), Office of Emergency Management (OEM) has deactivated the Emergency Operations Center effective at 12 noon as the Los Angeles County Fire and Sheriff’s Departments have transitioned out of the Station Fire’s Unified Command.
The
County’s CEO OEM has returned to “Duty Officer” status at this time.
The Office of Emergency Management will continue to monitor the events
involving the Station Fire, and distribute updates and press releases
as needed. CEO OEM will continue to move through to the Recovery Phase
of Operations which includes Local Assistance Centers (LACs). Once
those locations have been determined, the Office of Emergency Management will announce the dates and times of operations for the LACs.
On Thu., Sept. 10, the Small Business Administration (SBA), California Emergency Management Agency
(Cal EMA) and CEO OEM will be working with the Damage Assessment (PDA)
Teams in assessing damage caused to homes and businesses affected by
the fires.
The Station Fire is most active on the eastern and
southeastern sides. Firefighters are planning to conduct a burn-out
operation from an area east of Mt. Wilson, home to a communication
facility of radio and television station towers and an observatory, to
Red Box Rincon Rd. sometime today pending weather conditions. The last
two days the burn-out operation was cancelled due to unfavorable weather conditions.
Weather and burning conditions need to meet safety parameters for the
burn-out to take place. Air tankers and helicopters are committed to
support today’s operation.
More than 400 firefighters have created a fuel break on the eastern edge of the Station Fire in the San Gabriel Wilderness.
The intended fuel break will extend from Mt. Waterman to Cogswell
Reservoir. Due to difficulty of the steep terrain, the firefighters
have been camping in the wilderness.
Other fire crews continue to patrol and mop-up along Angeles Forest Hwy. 2, westerly around to Mendenhall Peak, southerly to the Tujunga Canyon following along the fire perimeter easterly to Inspiration Point. Firefighters continue to extinguish and cool smoldering embers around much of the remainder of the fire line. Mop-up extends 300 feet into the interior of the fire. Additionally, road crews from Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (DPW) and Cal Trans are beginning work to clear the roads of debris, repair damage and replace guard rails. Utilities companies are starting their assessment process which will lead to repair of the power lines and other utilities.
Various road closures remain in effect for safety precautionary reasons.
Forest Closures: Angeles National Forest: An area closure of the southern portion of the Angeles National Forest is still in effect until it is determined that it is safe to reopen the forest areas. For additional information on the closure, go to www.fs.fed.us/r5/angeles/.
